City Extracts

This photographic series explores the eerie intersection between the familiar and the uncanny. Drawing from real architectural details and public objects found across Geneva, each image transposes these mundane elements into liminal, deserted spaces reminiscent of the digital mythos of the «Backrooms».

By isolating symbols of urban infrastructure—a mailbox, a recycling container, a public bench, a flag—within sterile, overlit environments stripped of context, the work disorients perception. What once served clear civic functions now floats in a suspended space, stripped of purpose yet heavy with meaning.

These images question our relationship to public space, memory, and place-making. They invite us to reimagine how collective infrastructure can evoke intimacy or estrangement, nostalgia or unease. The project stands at the crossroads of documentary, speculative fiction, and urban archeology—rendering the banal uncanny and the everyday strange.

Cette série photographique explore la zone trouble entre le familier et l’étrange. En puisant dans des éléments architecturaux et des objets publics réels trouvés dans la ville de Genève, chaque image transpose ces artefacts urbains dans des espaces liminaux, désertés, inspirés de l’esthétique numérique des «Backrooms».

En isolant des symboles de l’infrastructure citadine — une boîte aux lettres, un conteneur de tri, un banc public, un drapeau — dans des environnements stériles, suréclairés et vidés de leur contexte, le travail brouille les repères. Ce qui avait autrefois une fonction claire devient flottant, sans but apparent mais chargé de sens.

Ces images interrogent notre rapport à l’espace public, à la mémoire et à la fabrique des lieux. Elles nous invitent à reconsidérer la manière dont les infrastructures collectives peuvent évoquer l’intimité ou l’étrangeté, la nostalgie ou le malaise. Ce projet se situe à la croisée du documentaire, de la fiction spéculative et de l’archéologie urbaine — rendant l’ordinaire inquiétant, et le quotidien étrange.
